Why Gen Z Woman Boards Plane Without Sister and 3 Kids Backed

A woman’s reason for boarding a flight even though her sister, her sister’s kids, and her brother in-law couldn’t has been backed by Reddit users.

In a viral Reddit post titled “AITAH [Am I the A******] for boarding a plane without my sister and leaving her and her kids behind?” a 21-year-old woman explained why she went ahead and got on the plane to spend Thanksgiving with her family, leaving her sister behind.

The woman said that she goes to college in the same town where her sister lives with her husband and three kids. They had all planned to travel home to see family together for the holidays, but things took a turn when her brother-in-law was denied boarding because he had had too much to drink.

She wrote in the post, which has received 14,000 upvotes and hundreds of responses in the comments, that her brother-in-law has acted aggressively after having consumed alcohol before.

But her sister said that she expected her to stay and help her, but that’s something she didn’t feel was right, explaining that she was excited to see her family and that her sister’s kids were not her responsibility. Calling her brother-in-law “a child,” she told her sister that she should leave him behind to deal with the consequences, but her sister stayed.

“I wouldn’t be missing my family for Thanksgiving because her husband can’t hold his liquor,” she wrote

“I boarded the flight and she stayed behind. My family was happy I made it but many of them called me insensitive for what I said and my mom was particularly mad that I didn’t stay and support my sister.”

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said that December 1 was the busiest day in its history with over 3.08 million people screened at airports nationwide, marking one of the busiest Thanksgiving travel periods on record.

The woman’s post received many responses in agreement with her actions. Meanwhile, etiquette expert Diane Gottsman told Newsweek: “Optimally, it would be nice for the entire family to fly back together, but in this case, the husband of the sister was unable to board the plane because he was inebriated. Although the sister did not want her sibling to leave her behind, the sister had paid for the flight and had responsibilities on her end that she had to uphold.

“Asking her sister to make a sacrifice because her brother made a poor decision should not be placed on the sister boarding the flight. This is a perfect...
