Gwen left their daughter with her mother-in-law, Annette, but she had to leave the baby with a stranger due to illness. Gwen was livid and swore never to speak or let Annette near her children until something unexpected happened.
“Please, Annette. You have to take Elaine. Josh and I really want to see this play, and we might not get more chances with our second baby coming,” Gwen begged her mother-in-law on the phone. Her daughter, Elaine, was 4, but they were expecting another child in a few months.
Therefore, she asked her mother-in-law, Annette, to babysit many times, which was always great. The grandmother loved doting on her granddaughter. However, things were a little different this time.

“Gwen, darling. I don’t think I can. I don’t feel well, and I wouldn’t want your child to get sick,” Annette reiterated. She had already told her daughter-in-law about her current illness, but Gwen had not been listening.
“Please. You have to do it. You promised us you would help with her when I had her. I’ll send Elaine with a face mask or something. It’s your duty as a grandmother,” Gwen insisted, and finally, Annette relented.
“Thank you! Thank you! I’m leaving right now!” Gwen said excitedly and put a coat on her daughter as they rushed out the door.
“This night was perfect. I know we’re not going to get many chances like this with our second baby coming, so thank you, baby,” Gwen told Josh on the way back to Annette’s house when the play ended.

“Oh, I just remembered I still had this on airplane mode,” she commented, smiling, and put the phone back in normal mode. Suddenly, a bunch of messages flew in, and her cell phone recorded several missed calls. “Jesus, your mother called several times.”
“Did something happen?” Josh asked, mild concern surfacing in his tone.
“I don’t know. There’s a voice note,” Gwen said and pressed play.
Annette’s rough, strained voice filled the car. “Gwen, darling. I’ve called and messaged many times. I need to go to the hospital, but I don’t think taking Elaine with me is a good idea, so I’m leaving her with my neighbor, Mrs. Johnson. I’ll talk to you later.”
“WHAT?” Gwen shouted when the voice note ended. “SHE LEFT OUR DAUGHTER WITH A STRANGER?”

“Now, Gwen, try to calm down. She said she went to the hospital. Something’s going –”
“I DON’T CARE WHERE SHE WENT! SHE SHOULD’VE TAKEN OUR KID ALONG!” Gwen interrupted her husband with more screams. “I can’t believe...
