Colton’s recklessness and laziness cost him dearly, and he lost everyone by his side, including his family. “Don’t blame others for your failures!” his son yelled at him one day. That day, something inside Colton shifted, and nothing was the same again.

Even in his wildest dreams, Colton had never imagined that his wife, Rosaline, and son, Derek, would sever all ties with him. He had never imagined he would return home to eerie loneliness every evening and no one to talk to.

But it happened. Rosaline divorced him and took their son away with her. Colton was alone, except for Rosaline’s words, which kept haunting him.

“A loser, Colton!” she had said. “You are a loser! Look at you… I’d never imagined I’d fall for a guy like you! I regret marrying you and bringing Derek into all this mess. I know I could have done better…”

Colton sank onto the living room couch and buried his face in his hands. Rosaline’s words kept ringing in his ears, and he felt awful. He finally took out his phone and dialed her…

“What is it, Colton?” she asked. “I’m in a bit of a hurry.”

“Hey, I was just wondering… um, you know, maybe you could send Derek over this weekend? It’s been a while since I’ve seen him.”

“Oh dear, Colton!” she said. “Don’t act like it’s my fault! The court has permitted you for visits, but you’re just too busy to spend time with Derek! And what happened when I sent him to your house the last time? You weren’t even home!”

“Hey, I’m sorry, Rose. Look, nothing will go wrong this time, alright?”

“I’ll talk to Derek and get back to you. I’m not sure if he’ll agree.”

“Whatever it is, just… just let me know before Saturday?”

“Alright, I’ll let you know. Bye!” And she hung up.

Colton was very irresponsible, which is why Rosaline divorced him. She was tired of him and his recklessness. He had been working in the same position for years with no promotion. He was someone who didn’t care about his family and squandered his money on drinking and parties.
