After her divorce, Anna had nowhere to go except the house she inherited from her grandmother. Fifty years ago, it used to be one of the most beautiful houses in the middle of the forest, but now, it was the complete opposite.

The house had been abandoned for five years after Anna’s grandmother passed away since there was no one to look after it. When Anna moved in, she had to clean the house for a day because everything was covered in spider webs, and the stinky drains made breathing difficult.

The house was situated in the middle of a forest, with nothing but trees around it. There was a lake nearby, and the closest highway that linked her house to the city was about two miles away.

Whenever Anna needed groceries, she had to walk for an hour to reach the supermarket in the city. Living in her grandmother’s house was difficult, but she had no choice after her ex-husband left her. It was a typical day for Anna when she was walking by the side of the highway near the forest to buy groceries from the city. Since the route only connected the city to the woods, it was usually not busy. Anna rarely saw cars pass by whenever she walked along the road.

It’s so cold, Anna thought and slid her hands inside her jacket pockets. The sides of the road were all white after it had snowed the night before. I should have stayed at home today, she thought.

While walking along the highway, something unusual near the road caught Anna’s attention. “Oh my God!” she gasped before running to the other side, where a car had slipped into a ditch.

“Hello?” she knocked on the car’s rear windshield, but no one responded. Then, she walked closer and opened the front door and was shocked to see a man lying unconscious in the driver’s seat.

“Hey! Wake up!” she shouted and shook the man’s shoulder, but he didn’t respond. Is he alive? Anna thought and tried to feel his pulse by putting her thumb on his wrist. “I think there is a faint pulse. I should call an ambulance.”

Without wasting time, Anna slid her phone out of her pocket and dialed 911. “Oh no! Oh no!” she said when she realized her phone was out of coverage. She walked towards the road and raised her phone, hoping it would catch signals, but nothing worked.
