Houston Texans tight end Cade Stover has been ruled out of Week 15’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins after undergoing unexpected emergency appendectomy surgery, per NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Stover was placed on Houston’s injured list last night as questionable due to illness and, according to the team, “underwent emergency appendectomy surgery last night. He is doing well today and expected to make a full recovery. Stover has been downgraded to out for Week 15 against the Miami Dolphins.”

While appendix issues can be serious (and even fatal) emergencies, it thankfully appears that Stover’s case was caught in time. Despite that, it is very likely that the TE will be out for several games and could even be put on the injured reserve list.

With only four games left in the regular season, Stover has a real possibility of being done for 2024. It is probably that with him out, the Texans will call on Irv Smith to take over as the primary backup to starting tight end Dalton Schultz for today’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

Stover is a versatile tight end who has made a significant impact in his first season with the Houston Texans. After being drafted, he signed a four-year, $4,758,940 contract with a $738,940 signing bonus. In 2024, Stover has appeared in 13 games, recording 14 catches on 20 targets for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Known for his blend of size (6’4″, 250+ lbs), athleticism, and strong blocking skills, Stover has quickly adapted to the NFL, contributing both as a receiver and in the run game. Prior to joining the Texans, Stover was a standout at Ohio State, where he played a key role in their offense, particularly in 2022.
